Grades 7th – 12th
Art 2018-2019 takes the student beyond traditional pencil and paper, to hone skills in a fun and personalized way with varied mediums, giving them a creative outlet amidst their academic rigors. Group and individual instruction/tutoring bring out their abilities to execute various techniques. With project directives given, they then totally personalize each project, which in turn gives them the ability to find what drives them personally — a healthy and beneficial outlet!
Whatever their ability students will deeper understand: proportion, line, light, varied mediums, shape and composition, and techniques. We jump through many topics listed below to keep the class varied and interesting for everyone. Students have a major input into their projects. Successive years with me yield greater improvement and skill. It’s a privilege to tutor your students.
Grades: are given on preparedness, effort, improvement, and execution as it pertains to following directions. Beginners who do not necessarily create the best aesthetically pleasing art are well capable of getting an A for the class. Thank you for the opportunity to build into them.
This class will be worth 1 credit.
For the 1st class
- Students bring supplies (minimum first 5 on the list)
- 2 or 3 examples of art they like, are drawn to. (originals, photos, tablet or laptop)
- 1 or 2 examples of their work (optional)
We will start with a brief look/discussion at what everyone brings. We will examine what draws us to a particular artwork — whether chalk-street art, posters, painting, pencil drawings, markers, color, line, or emotion. The class often determines their next project.
Coursework and Topics
- Foundation drawing principles through quick sketching and realistic drawing projects of students’ choice
- Zentangles and Doodles — pen and ink design with added color
- Upon the Printed Page collages project
- Charcoal or Conte’ pencil — Rembrandt
- On the Colored Page project
- Alcohol Ink Project or A Suminagashi Project
- Paint Guided Acrylic and Watercolor Project — demonstrated techniques
- Body or face proportions (or both, up to class members) varied
- Cartoon animation — tonal markers
- Abstract project along lines of a famous modern artist-
- Student choice project
- 2x craft based Christmas project classes — polymer clay or other-different every year
- The impact on computer and graphic arts programs in the arts

- 11” x 14” mixed media pad (most important)
- Newsprint Pad — large 18×24, smallest accepted is 11×14
- Various Drawing Pencils (any 2 different of the following) 2B, 3B or 4B and (any 2 different of the following) 6B, 7B, 8B or 9B
- Kneaded Eraser
- Markers as follows: grey marker/alcohol based — light to lt. midtone, not too dark
- Sharpie Ultra Fine Black marker
- Sharpie Fine point (regular) black marker
- Charcoal Sticks: soft or medium or hard; or charcoal pressed sticks (not willow sticks)
- 1 White Charcoal Square Stick, or white opaque pencil
- 12” Ruler
- Mechanical Pencil and/or Empty Ball Point Pen
- Optional: polymer clay 2-3 colors when we’re ready at Christmas time
Paint, brushes, Conte’ pencils, and colored paper will be provided.
